"I would say that all of your instructors are Gurus!! I have learned more watching just half of the videos so far than what I've learned in two college classes." - Mike Sandlin

"I have been purchasing and actually using your videos for about 2 years now... they are very concise, always hit the mark, and I am able to use the information immediately... Your instructors really know their stuff! I have referred others to your website. I would not be able to be in business if it were not for you guys! Thank you, and keep it up! You rock!"  - Jan Lybarger

  • 1 - Introduction (Running Time - 4:07)

    2 - Creating Characters (Running Time - 19:16)
In this chapter, you will learn how to use Flash to create your custom characters. Learn to use the line tool and the fill tool to easily design the Control and Hostile ships for this side scrolling game.

    3 - Environment Detail (Running Time - 14:46)
In this chapter, you will design the background and foreground that will loop in your game. This game will take place in space so we will design a space background and the planet surface for the foreground.

    4 - Booster Animation (Running Time - 10:29)
Every good game contains some good animation. In this chapter we will create a looping booster animation for the thrusters of both the Control ship and the Hostile ship. This is a good lesson on using Movie Clips.

    5 - Importing (Running Time - 3:32)
If you decide that you want to create your custom ships in another program, then this chapter will teach you how to import those images. Take those images you imported and assign them as your characters.

    6 - Control Ship Movements (Running Time - 12:04
In this chapter, you will learn how to assign movements to the Control ship. You will learn how to apply actionscript to this ship to use the arrow keys to move the Control Ship.

    7 - Missile Controls (Running Time - 20:17)
In this chapter, you will learn how to program the missile in this game to follow along the x axis from left to right to give the effect of firing across the screen. Learn actionscript to tell the missile to fire and give it variables.

    8 - Missile Variables (Running Time - 18:14)
Now that you have created the missile and programed the actionscript to control the basic movements, now you will adjust variables to define speed and rate. This is what will make this game your own, you will learn to test and re-test until its right.

    9 - Looping Backgrounds (Running Time - 20:17)
In this tutorial, you will learn how to use actionscript to program the looping background and the looping foreground. Learn to apply a loopstart and a loopstop to a designated movieclip.

    10 - Background Variables (Running Time - 8:37)
In this tutorial, you will learn how to use actionscript to adjust both the looping background and the looping foreground. Add a realistic feel by slowing the background while speeding the foreground. Use the variables you programmed before to make your own adjustments.

    11 - Random Hostile Characters (Running Time - 19:30)
In this tutorial, you will learn how to randomize movie clips. You will randomize the Hostile ship and program the number of random restarts and speed that they fly along the x axis.

12 - Lives and Restart for Control Ship (Running Time - 11:41)
This is an important chapter, because you will learn how to animate the death sequence and restart of the Control ship. Learn how to designate movie clips that will start the sequence using actionscript.

13 - Lives and Restart for Hostiles (Running Time - 13:20)
In this important chapter, you will learn how to animate the death sequence and restart of the Hostile ship. You will design a short death sequence and add actionscript to the missile that will activate the Hostile death sequence.

    14 - Boundaries (Running Time - 8:20)
In this chapter, you will learn how to designate boundaries to the game. In any good game you cannot go off screen so we will need to tell Flash where our boundaries are.

    15 - Gameover Counter (Running Time - 8:50)
In this chapter, you will learn how to create a points counter. Use dynamic text to add a custom counter in the game. You will also design the Game Over sequence and design the restart button.

    16 - Sound (Running Time - 6:16)
Adding sound can transform a good game into a GREAT game. In this chapter you will learn how to import sounds into Flash, and how to assign those sounds to Movie Clips.
